December 9: Greetings from the North West Pacific, USA

(viewed 2180 times)
This is Mt. Shuksan behind (a frozen) Picture Lake, one of the most photographed scenery up here in Washington State in the US.

In my travels I have visited this lake several times and have seen it in different seasons - it does not disappoint! Mt. Shuksan has several glaciers and it stands near Mt. Baker, the world's record holder of snow (140 ft!), so it is beautiful to see this snow-capped mountain on a clear summer's day, or framed with a combo of evergreens and bright red-orange trees during fall.

I recently moved up here from California, now I know what "seasons" means.

To all my moblog friends and to visitors to this page, SEASON'S GREETINGS from Washington State!

sidenote: 99% of the time I post from my iphone - but the camera doesn't work (yet?) after surviving 5 mins in the washer! But he's on his way to recovery.

Christmas in Australia

(viewed 1711 times)
Christmas in Australia is hot, sometimes even a stinker. The weather lends itself to either a BBQ outside or a cold seafood platter. No sitting around a cosy fireplace for us.

Australians are a friendly lot. Not much bothers us, apart from a poor performing Australian cricket team. This even rubs off onto our wildlife. So apart from the odd crocodile, a dozen or more snakes, couple of man eating white pointers, a few spiders and a stingray, everything is friendly and the friendliest of all are the flies. They travel miles just to be with you.

So when I think of Christmas it is sun, sand, seafood and sticky flies.

Below is an exert from a well known Christmas Jingle which sums up pretty well the other great Aussie Christmas tradition:)

Come the afternoon
Grandpa has a doze
The kids and uncle Bruce
Are swimming in their clothes
The time comes round to go
We take a family snap
Then pack the car and all shoot through
Before the washing up

Wishing you a very merry christmas, and may a blowie or two visit you this Christmas.

this time of year isn't all about joy and celebration.

it's about darkness, despair, death.

Drink your last loving drop of wine
Be lost in the melting haze inside
And when you wake, well I pray you'll have come
out from the furnace and into the cold

Oh winterland, winterland won't you come, come, come
Lead us into your home
Tenderly tend to our sadness, undo our blame
And take away the pain

The winds all sing with blind delight
as long shadows beckon you in with claws
And if you shout you won't be heard
The stranglehold too strong, the force so sheer

Oh winterland, winterland your desire is inflamed
Now it's too late

Well if you want the winter you won't have long to wait
It's nearly the end of days
All the leaves have fallen from the boughs of the trees
It's starting to freeze

The earth is turned to a frozen husk
No longer a fertile soil will yield
Now hear the widows mourn from afar
Stained by salvation's bleeding heart

You search for a way out but there's no way to be found
You're in a winterland
Eternally awake in a darkness that will never end
and you'll never return

So if you want the winter you won't have long to wait
It's nearly the end of days
All the leaves have fallen from the boughs of the trees
It's starting to freeze, it's freezing

Oh how sad to know you won't be back
Oh how sad, nature has an evil plan always
