1st December - Like crying in the night

(viewed 655 times)
Advent Calendar

He will come like last leaf’s fall.
One night when the November wind
has flayed the trees to the bone, and earth
wakes choking on the mould,
the soft shroud’s folding. He will come like frost.
One morning when the shrinking earth
opens to mist, to find itself
arrested in the net
of alien, sword-set beauty. He will come like dark.
One evening when the bursting red
December sun draws up the sheet
and penny-masks its eye to yield
the star-snowed fields of sky.

He will come, will come,
will come like crying in the night,
like blood, like breaking,
as the earth writhes to toss him free.
He will come like a child.

Rowan Williams

Previously I have used the first verse of Betjeman's *Advent 1955* which I love but this time I've posted *Advent Calendar* to honour the outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury. Happy Advent mobloggers : - )

Happy Holidays

(viewed 1124 times)
Probably the most traditionally festive thing I did this season was to watch a screening of Capra's It's A Wonderful Life hosted by a local cinephile group in a wonderful church. Everyone was given angel wings to wear during the performance.

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season, whatever you may be doing. I hope it is filled with life, love, happiness and open-heartedness.

Doors of perception

(viewed 1211 times)
Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving
forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we are
curious...and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
-- Walt Disney

Happy holidays.

Who made all the pies?

(viewed 799 times)
This year I have developed mince pie mania. I have made nearly 3 kilos of the misleadingly named dried fruit confection and several batches of pastry, all striving for the effortless buttery flakiness of my mother's efforts down the years.

As a child I took the traditional mince pies, the Christmas pudding we made in October, the turkey dinner, the ham with pease pudding on Boxing Day for granted.

Now I realise that mums - and sometimes dads - work very hard to meet our appetites at Christmas, Hannukah, Eid and every other festive feast.

So this one's for all you bakers, tradition makers, slightly stressed supermarket shoppers as you get ready for the big day.

This year, I'll be making some mince pies for my mum.

Twinkle, twinkle...

(viewed 1235 times)
This year has been full of change for me. Some unavoidable, some chosen. There have been be ups and downs, a lot of stress, but plenty of joy. There's still a way to go, but i can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A very merry christmas to all of you, and a happy, hopeful and hilarious new year!

December 21 - Santa Claus (he visits the child in all of us)

(viewed 1109 times)
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly,
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

Santa Claus as portrayed in the poem 'A Visit From Saint Nicholas' composed in 1822 by Clement C. Moore.

Seasons Greetings to you and yours from me and mine. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all.

December Babies

(viewed 782 times)
I thought that by December 20th, I'd be announcing the arrival of my twin granddaughters, but they haven't put in an appearance quite yet. Still, a creche seems in order. Encased in plexiglass, this creche is outside the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal.
Happy Christmas, one and all!
