Yes, yes people I have emerged from my self realised obscurity to bestow knowledge on all headz. Used ta be out and about now strictly lying low dispensing wisdom.
Too much going down to stay quiet, now all of us have to rise up and speak truth to power.
There has to be more to us than dhal roti and Nokia phones...

Britz

I posted this on C4 Forum tonight:
"Just watched second part and my feelings
are mixed. I'm a writer myself and my mate was
in Britz so I know some stuff from the inside.
I would just like to say that its difficult to
produce art at a time when Muslims are being
demonised. Britz towed a fine line between being
a gripping story and a sensationalist expose drama
doc. Some of it was well written and shot, some
issues explored, others not. There is a burden of
expectation placed on these programmes and in the
times we're in we need to explore issues and be
upfront about them, but it's the wider context
that bugs me. Up and down the land Muslim boys
and girls are going to be going to school tommorow,
catching buses, going to Mosque late afternoon and
just carrying on their normal lives. All of a sudden
they may become targets even more. I have a close
friend who is covered and catches the same DLR train
that Nasima does everyday to go to Uni. Will her
life change? As a fellow writer we share an
enormous responsibility with what we create and
some parts of Britz left me uneasy and fill me
with fear for tommorow morning. I and some of my
friends have been interviewed by the Met and I
live with the knowledge that I am one of those
people under surveillance. The stories have to
be told I know that but it's the consequences
that I am fearful of."

No Justice No Peace!
Me and my lad attended the United Families & Friends Annual Remembrance Procession to support the relatives and friends of those who have died in custody. Followed and supported a number of campaigns over the years and decided to go to this yearly event. So many people have died in Police custody, in Mental Health institutions and in Immigration detention camps and there has been very little accountability and justice for families. It was very humbling to meet parents, brothers and children of people that have died. Twenty years I wrote a play about deaths in custody - blogged about it some time back here and it's depressing to see how little has changed. I leave you with the eloquent words of Benjamin Zephaniah:
'The death of Stephen Lawrence
Has taught us
That we cannot let the illusion of freedom
Endow us with a false sense of security as we walk the streets,
The whole world can now watch
The academics and the super cops
Struggling to define institutionalised racism
As we continue to die in custody

This graf always used to make me laff. It's
on the side wall of a local Asian shop. Some
one covered up da pipe outside to conceal da
last word. Allah/Lord knows what goes in this
town and how many stories there are in the

Novel blogging
I can't claim credit for top three photos -
they are all from a photo archive that I am
using to do research for the novel I'm
working on. Middle one is amazing 'cos I'd
been told that there was a factory outside
Green St School but had never believed it
or seen any evidence. The last two give
you some clue about one of the themes of
the book - urban decay and its impact on
white working class and immigrant communities.
Day off tommorow so will be out and about
taking some photos. Been reading about this
thing called 'Psychogeography' which seems
to be relevant to what I'm doing but can give
me headaches too...
Finally got round to setting up a blog for da
novel so peeps can track progress and I can
build a buzz around it. Click da Wordpress icon
