Today it's the carnaval parade, all the wagons and costumes on show.
Great weather for it too!
I'll be snapping away down there this afternoon but I might be a little
the worse for wear tonight to prep them for MobLog.
We'll see.

Carnaval, some views of "the crowd"
The guys with the feathers in their hats take all this very seriously;
these are the real "party-goers".
They'll take a week off work and get through the next four days on maybe
four hours a night sleep, the rest of next week, after Tuesday, is
dedicated to the recovery.

Carnaval in "Boemelburcht" 2007
Day one;
Stads Prins Jan "the red" assumes control of the town from the
"burgermeester".
From now, for the next four days, the town of Zevenaar will be known as
"Boemelburcht".
Tonight the six carnaval societies will each hold a huge party in their
various halls and Jan "de rooie" will visit all of them along with his
entourage.
This is the start of the biggest hangover since new years eve.
(actually that's not that long ago, but still)

Colouring-in

I'm waiting in Corby for some freight to come in.
Playing around with a new (to me) technique for colouring-in black and white images.
This picture was taken on top of Calton hill in Edinburgh.
Best go and do some proper work now, I s'pose.

Carnaval!

So, it all starts (for some) tomorrow.
"Carnaval" means "to drop meat" or, in other words, "to fast".
It's all to do with Shrove Tuesday and the forty days of lent preceding Easter.
Basically a big fat four day blow-out before getting down to the serious business of being a good Christian.
In Holland, especially in the east and south, it's a big event.
The town is "taken over" by the "Stads prins" (voted in by all the carnaval societies).
The mayor is temporarily deposed and chaos reigns for the four days.
The town's name changes (Zevenaar to Boemelburcht) and a huge 3 day party starts.
On the Sunday there's a big parade with all the various carnaval groups and individuals showing off the costumes and wagons they've been working on in secret for the last few months. Often with a "political theme", berating some council decision or other.
Monday morning is "Fruh Shoppe" where everyone starts the day with a huge communal breakfast and begins a long pub crawl from about 10am onwards.
Tuesday is "haring happen" which consists of chewing on soused herrings as an antidote to the inevitable hangover.
I'll be posting more as the weekend progresses.
