Restart

(viewed 496 times)
Following an abortive hour or so fighting with Google's blogger, I've come back here to re-launch this one. It will now be general, and not restricted to our Egypt holiday.

Post Mortem

(viewed 537 times)
Well, now we're back I can only apologise to anybody that was hoping to follow the blog. I'm on Vodafone payg, and I found that Vodafone Egypt's gprs coverage allowed me to browse and send simple text emails, but emails with attachments for the blog and text emails with multiple recipients just hung.

AOK

Yay!... Things are started to run more smoothly. The much talked-about new security measures were fairly painless and, if anything, it took less time than normal. Our aeroplane is sitting here at the gate and looks airworthy. They won't let me go and kick the tyres, though, for some reason.

Shambolic Start

(viewed 511 times)
23:20 and we're just settling down at our Surrey hotel who are going to look after our car for a week and drive us to the airport in the morning in a shuttle bus. Mmmm.... everything should be run like a well-oiled machine but the prospect of a smooth start faded with the signs on the M25 announcing "delays between j9 and j7". Thompson allow you to check in the night before a morning flight but we arrived at zone 'F' as per instructions with 20mins to spare but nobody around. Luckily a Thompson minion appeared when there was five minutes to spare and directed us to zone 'E'. Oh, right, pardon me for not being psychic. Then we got lost going back to the car park: it's one of those weird ones where you have to go to a kind of 'G-1' in order to get to 'G'. A helpful window cleaner with a public school accent set us right. Then to the Russ Hill Hotel, a charming, shambolic establishment that has definitely seen better days. You know the kind of thing: only 50% of the lightbulbs work and none of the doors fit. You have to flit several times between the car park check-in and the hotel check-in to complete the transaction, then to find £10 in loose change for tickets for the shuttle bus in the morning. The whole business is completed by writing the same information several times on various barely-legible photocopies of photocopies of photocopies. I bet you that when we arrive in a supposedly-third-world country tomorrow they'll have discovered computers. Wow. I feel better now I've got that off my chest. Blogging is great.
