Calpis

(viewed 774 times)
Unohana (The Japanese shop in Golders Green) was out of my usual
Lipovitan drink so I decided to push the boat out and spend £1.50 on a
can of Calpis. Partly because it has a nice can, partly because it
said "pure and refresh" on it which I thought was cute, but mostly
because it's one of the few Japanese drinks in there THAT DOESN'T HAVE
SOMETHING FLOATING OR GROWING IN IT.

It opened with a rather baleful pop. That should have been my first warning. This was the kind of damp fizz you get when you open up that Tupperware container that's been sat at the back of the fridge since Christmas rather than that healthy "KiFzzzzzzzzzzzzz" of an ice cold Coca Cola.

It smelled like aspirin.
It looked like aspirin.
Unfortunately it didn't taste like aspirin.

Even though the can was ice cold the drink had managed to stay resolutely luke warm. It was simultaneously salty and sweet in a combination that should not ever appear in a drink form, well, certainly not any drink that may be accidentally purchased by a heterosexual man.

It was only when I was half way through drinking it that I noticed that the main ingredient was SKIMMED MILK.I was drinking carbonated milk.
I can feel it in my stomach even now.

The National

YOU! I'm talking to YOU.
Stop barging your way to the front of gigs and then chatting to your
mate. It's rude and the next time you do it I'm going to bitch slap
you so hard that you'll be flat out until the encore.
Apart from that (and you know who you are) The National were amazing.
An incredibly intense performance. And a phenomenal drummer - just
stunning.

Supporting The National at the 100 Club. FTW probably work a
lot better on paper than they do live. They seem to have ideas but no
enthusiasm for them, although there was one startling moment where the
singer suddenly launched into what sounded suspiciously like opera.
