Kita No Ice Cream, Otaru

(viewed 1210 times)
Because kids love the great taste of ice cream on a hot sunny day. Just look at the flavours you can choose from (actual translation of picture 2):

- sea urchin
- squid ink
- natto
- tofu
- wasabi
- beer

We can confirm that the sea urchin and wasabi flavours are scrummy, but weird. (Sadly, they'd run out of natto, which is widely regarded as Japan's Most Inedible Foodstuff.)

The penultimate leg of our hop around Hokkaido brought us to Otaru, and the Hotel Sonia's shameless cash-in sequel Hotel Sonia II.

Hakodate morning market

(viewed 2708 times)
Mainly seafood, as you'd expect from a harbour town. Note that picture 4 is of a restaurant window display, and shows the certificate for the patent they've taken out on the Dancing Don next to it - their name for a donburi rice dish with a LIVE FRICKIN' SQUID stuck on the top of it.

Hakodate appears to have been big on food, doesn't it? Never really noticed that until now.

One of these photos is of a model rather than the real thing. Sorry.

Mongolian barbecue dish popular across Hokkaido: heat up a grill shaped like Genghis Khan's hat (hence the name), and throw raw lamb on top of it until it's done. There's even a pop song about it.
