Welcome To Narita...

(viewed 857 times)
...the small Japanese town with a bloody great international airport attached, where we stayed on the final night of our Japan tour. We didn't take many pictures there, so most of this section covers the journey from Toya to Ueno, and on to Narita.

This is our hotel for the night, the Wakamatsu Honten, which has a fine public bath, stupendous meals, and can be surprisingly cheap if you get them the right time of year.

First picture by me (because I'm a sucker for rubbish wordplay), all the rest by The BBG.

And I Said, 'What About Breakfast At Seikomart?'

(viewed 771 times)
Contents of a convenience store picnic breakfast: hard boiled eggs, cheese, orange juice, coffee, ingeniously wrapped rice balls where the seaweed doesn't come into contact with the rice until the exact moment of unwrapping (unless you bollocks it up like I do), and a peculiar jam butty with jam in the middle and butter on one side of the outside.

You know the sort of coffee that perks you up? Well, this is the other sort. Spotted in the vending machine at Hotel Kawanami.

Showashinzan, Toyako Onsen

(viewed 722 times)
Toyako Onsen is a naturally volcanic region, but it still came as a surprise when a totally new volcano emerged out of the ground between 1943 and 1945. The progress of Showashinzan, as it was named, was plotted by amateur vulcanologist Masao Mimatsu, who's the guy in the statue. Pictures 2 and 4 by The BBG.
