Volcano Science Museum, Toyako Onsen

(viewed 1417 times)
Mount Usu caused a fair amount of damage to Toyako Onsen when it erupted back in 2000, but amazingly no lives were lost. This museum tells the story. Picture 1 by The BBG.

Map of Lake Toya (the dragon is the local symbol for the area) and the lake itself. Picture 2 by The Belated Birthday Girl.

Summer nights in Toyako Onsen

(viewed 643 times)
Two regular events take place every night in Toyako Onsen during the summer, as advertised in the first picture. There's a firework display on the lake, the cue for endless futile attempts to capture it using a cameraphone. And before the fireworks, there's a rather fun circle dance in the harbour - there are only six steps involved, and everyone can join in.

Welcome to Toyako Onsen...

...the penultimate leg of our Japan tour. Although strictly speaking, "welcome to the Hotel Kawanami" is more accurate, and can be sung to the tune of Hotel California. Wakka-wakka-wow wakka-wak wah wah.

QB Barbers, Sapporo Station

Ever passed through London Euston station and seen Cut Barbers? I'm sure they'd be the first to admit that they stole the whole idea of no-frills voucher-paid hoover-finished station-based haircuts from QB in Japan.

Sapporo Beer Museum

(viewed 1908 times)
Various displays from the showcase for Japan's premier not-quite-as-good-as-Asahi beer. The first is from a series of models theoretically showing you how they make beer (not to scale): the second is a pre-release display of Sapporo's newest malt beer, guarded by ferocious animals: and the third is a stained glass window from the old brewery building, taken by The BBG.

Sapporo Biergarten

The restaurant attached to the Sapporo Beer Museum, where you can eat jingisukan (pronounced like Genghis Khan - it's Mongolian barbecued lamb) and drink their not-quite-as-good-as-Asahi beer. Picture 2 by The BBG.
