The mountain desert -Matmata - a region of troglodyte villages

There have probably been troglodyte villages in this area for over 700 years. In the 1960's there was a lot of flooding and many homes collapsed and the majority of families were built homes in a nearby town, but some families remained and still live in their cave dwellings, others are used solely as tourist attractions and famously in Star Wars.

El Djem

A 3rd century Roman colosseum - 2nd in size only to the one in Rome. It was built to hold 30,000+ in a town that had a population of around 20,000. El Djem was formerly the ancient very wealthy Roman town of Thysdrus, which was situated on the crossroads of the caravan trade.
