My Defective Ear

A 366-day pursuit in personal portraiture, presented by nige.

The challenge: to photograph, and post to this moblog, a portrait shot of myself, every single day, over the next year. Apparently, it's much harder than it sounds...

Perhaps more challenging: that i don't enjoy seeing my phizog in a photo at the best of times, and knowing that i'm probably going to annoy the hell out of the moblog community in doing this. So, sincere apologies in advance for this undertaking, but i just can't help myself. I promise to try and be creative, so you won't have to look at my mug every day.

Anyone interested in joining me? I think i'm probably going to need the company...

ID week: Livingwell membership card, circa 1989

Back when i was at school i had a few part time jobs. One of them was working as a waiter at Milton Keynes hottest restaurant at the time (by that i mean they had no air conditioning, ha!), called Houstons.

Houstons was based in the Winter Gardens, the latest development in MK at the time, and the place was basically a tex-mex rip off of TGI Fridays, but they certainly got the custom. Alot of people came to eat and drink, and especially to see the bottle juggling barmen (yes, it was Tom Cruise Cocktail era (sigh)).

I lied about my age to get the job (I was 15 & should have been 18, because i had to serve alcohol), but besides the excellent tips, one of the reasons I worked there was because I got membership to the gym for 6 quid a month! The place was so exclusive back then (who knows why) that normal memberships were 50 pounds a month, which is comparable to what people pay for gym membership today. The equipment did talk to you though. Seriously.

Papa's got a brand new bag

(viewed 1216 times)
I've been looking for a day bag to house my DSLR for ages. I'm not a big fan of Crumpler, Lowepro, Tamrac, Billingham et al. mainly because I'm not too keen on the looks, and I prefer something a little different to what everyone buys at my local Jessops.

I almost gave up searching and decided to make my own out of a decent non-camera bag, but then I stumbled on this brand: Domke. The bag is very strong (i'd say very similar quality to Manhattan Portage), but what sold me was the removable padded inserts, which can be bought in loads of sizes and combinations to suit varying needs. This can hold my camera with the 18-200mm VR attached, and carry quite a few other lenses & bits with room left in the bag. There are lots of different models, they are rather nice, and I recommend highly. I imported mine from the US because they cost about 80 notes here. Well worth it.
