well it seems i'm in exile. locked out. stuck out in the cold. my bag was stolen at a tacticians gig two weeks ago. phone gone. no insurance and no available upgrade till august.

it took 02 two weeks to send me a new sim card and unblock it and this stupid fucking borrowed phone i've got won't allow any messages to email addresses. i can't attach any kind of hardware to my work computer and i no longer have a computer at home.

so, no more moblogging for me. not until sometime in august anyway. proper fucking fucked off i am.

new boots and panties!

(viewed 1111 times)
well thanks to an eagle eyed feller at who spotted that my power tubes were 6L6GAY *ahem* and not the required 6L6GC i popped out of work and splurged on an entire new set of bottles for it and oh. my. god. it's gone from being nice sounding and quite loud to phenomenal sounding and potentially lethal!

so i took it to the gig last night feeling confident that even if it is still suffering the occasional hiccup it would at least be loud and sweet sounding... of course sod's law intervened and not only did i break my d string on my main guitar forcing a mid song change but later in the same song the jack socket broke off my spare guitar leading to a lot of embarassing silences, a prolonged drum and bass interlude and a lot of frenzied on stage fault finding and string changing.

it's about time i had a bit of good luck at a gig i think...

rectifier and power tubes

sorry about all this geekery. i'm asking people in the know techy questions about what's wrong with my amp and it's handy to have pictures up somewhere!

trouble shooting

(viewed 1305 times)
my poor amp seems to be unwell. i've only had a little while and i've only done a couple of gigs with it (both un-mic'd) and it's been struggling. 45w from 2 6L6s into 2 x 12 should be frighteningly loud. like window breaking loud. but it's not. it's barely keeping up with the drummer, even on 10.

i've established that the fourth tube from the right (a 7025)is microphonic. but when i replaced it with a good quality 12AX7, (which i'd been reliably informed was the same thing in all but name) the reverb stopped working.

the leads to the reverb tank are a bit ropey too but i'm not sure that covers the catalogue of *hiss pop bang* and overall lack of welly going on here. i've got a gig with it tonight. i'm really hoping it holds up.

Tackys do the METRO

(viewed 1057 times)
played a gig at the metro last night with the tacticians. great lineup of:

- the standards (top)

- the subliminal girls (sharp shoes, bottom)

- the tacticians

- havanna guns

i got "styled" by maria before the gig and i think i ended up looking like a eurotrash 50s throwback. worse than that, like a eurotrash 50s throwback from the 80s. two kinds of denim? are you sure? anyway i kept my mouth shut and played ball. well bass anyway. all the bands were great last night. the standards are pure pop fun. like squeeze or the knack. kind of cheesy but totally wonderful.

the subliminal girls were great (and won the best shoes award by a mile). kind of art brut meets duran duran. clever, silly and strangely charming. i'll definitely be seeking them out to play gigs with daddy long legs.

the tacky's gave it a good go but the sound wasn't up to much and i totally f*ucked up the twiddly bit in the middle of born to run (putting everybody else off in the process) *shame*. the guy from the label told them they should drop it as an encore anyway. i'm pretty happy with that as the joke wore kind of thin after last time to be honest. i bet they still play it when he's not about. hehe, weirdos. apart from that i thought we played okay. not as well as saturday but hey ho.

the havanna guns are possibly the best looking band i've ever seen. all of them like supermodel hott. weird. it's basically cleverly produced and fairly minimal indie pop. the problem was that if i can't hear the vocals (which i couldn't) then i'm going to need some kind of harmonic or rhythmic interest to keep my attention, and 4 minutes of "A to D" doesn't really do that for me... i blame the velvet underground for this kind of thing. speaking of which, the keyboard player looks uncannily like nico. the german accent doesn't detract from that impression either. i might love these guys if i could hear what the unfeasably beautiful singer was singing but as i couldn't... i didn't.
