hello, my name is al. i make music by myself and with a band called the fictive kinship. i work in an office in london on railway related stuff and cycle to work every day. i love cooking, swimming and riding my bike all over london. i try to eat well, write good songs and not drink too much. i don't always succeed.

folk clubs

(viewed 548 times)
i went to the elecro-acoustic club in shoreditch last night to watch our good friends and all round musical geniuses hexicon. i didn't take any pics of them because i was too busy being agog with wonder at their folk-pop gorgeousness. i did however sit through quite a lot of support acts.

1 - massively affected lady in a gingham dress doing a cutesy-wutesly joanna newsom impression with a guitar. as a die-hard joanna newsom fan i found it excruciating quite frankly

2 - a young pony-tailed american guy with a guitar who did what can only be described as "funk-folk" and was every bit as unappealing as that sounds. he thought he was unbelievably talented and funny. he was neither. ironic scat singing, beat-boxing and singing a in made up "forreign" language isn't funny when it's done well. when it's done this badly it's pretty depressing.

3 - the above gang. it was a guy called yo zushi and what appeared to be a band of quasi-devoted followers non of whom seemed to know any of the songs he was playing (from sheets of paper scatterd on the floor) they just sat there looking embarassed, trying to hide their faces occasionally trying to join in on various instruments and with harmonies and generally making it difficult not to giggle. they finished with a toe-curlingly earnest version of "danny boy". potentially amazing but actually just a bit confusing.

4 - two guys with zithers, effects and guitars. they later expanded to include drums, electric guitar and french horn. it was pretty ramshackle and flower hated them... i thought they were great! still quite a lot of studied nervous aloofness going on which always grates. but still. they made some great sounds. i'd like to see them again. they were called the blisters. still are probably.

then and only then did hexicon finally (oh thank god) do their amazing thing. shame i was half asleep by then and flower was fidgeting like a overtired toddler. they were, despite the late hour, mediocre sound and odd atmosphere, absolutely amazing. my favourite band and they blow me away every single time i see them. hats off to tom, paul and mike. x

hangover rendered invisible by science

if i hide my "i was in the pub last night" under-eye dark circles under these handy self-adhesive dark-circle covers, my boss will never know i was in fact down the pub last night!

rock and roll weekend part 3

(viewed 458 times)
man it was fun though. five new songs recorded live with vocals in one day. fantastic gig on saturday night in a small bar, great sound full of screaming cheering nutters. then getting all five new songs mixed and finished and sounding amazing on sunday and all done in time to get to the pub for a proper celebration afterwards. shame i was so pumped up from it that i stayed up all night on sunday and felt like death all day monday.

turnmills toilets

(viewed 536 times)
band night at turnmills on a wednesday night isn't exactly the most dynamic event on earth. it's all very brightly lit revealing the naff sub-rainforrest cafe style decor, it's draughty and sparsely populated. the stage where the bands play faces a wall with a bench seat against it and the staff all look bored. the sound's not very good and the stage itself is falling apart. why is it that when "club" clubs try and put on bands they always do it so wrong?

the toilets are great though. so many cubicles, mirrors hand dryers! all for meeeee!
