track vicar

(viewed 2086 times)
yep, it's a new fixed gear bicycle aesthetic i've just inadvertantly invented. you may already have heard of "fakenger" or even "hip-hop slave/clown bike" but "track vicar" just about covers this rather odd collection of bits i reckon.

it came about as i was crossing the bike/pedestrian crossing on the south side of westminster bridge last night. some mope on a mountain bike jumped the lights and crashed into my front wheel at sufficient speed to turn it pringle-shaped and split the rim. i was unhurt but annoyingly i'd already angrily waved him off when i realised the extent of the damage to the bike.

i ended up carrying the stricken thing back to two different shops in waterloo, checking out various wheels none of which seemed right, (cheap and nasty, absurdly expensive, daftly tech looking etc). eventually this little beaut came out of the basement at evans on the cut and the "track vicar" aesthetic was born.

had endless faff changing it with a pinch puncture on the first go, valve on the second spare tube being too short for the deep rims but i got there in the end.

i have to say that the people in evans were really cool and helpful. offered to lend tools pumps and space to do the repair myself.

eventually got home two and a half hours late with a sore arm from carrying the bike about and with a considerably lighter wallet. i wasn't best pleased to put it mildly.

i'm more philosophical today as the sun's out and i've got a working bike and a weird new look.

i like it anyway.

improvised chilli prawn ramen

quite pleased with this one. checked a few recipes but most seemed to be nasty sounding approximations of the real thing or require hours of stock preperation and ingredients i couldn't get hold of at short notice. so i sort of busked my own recipe and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.
nice and fresh tasting (not too hot) but it made me sweat like crazy!

happy families

apparently this is lily's first smile to be captured on camera. score! i couldn't get her to give me a real beamer like this (i'm a kind of funny looking though so it's perhaps not that surprising) but dad (bottom pic) seems to be dab hand at inducing mirth in the little one.

a delightful sunday in the suburbs

(viewed 482 times)
been having a bit of trouble posting from files on my fickle and bad-tempered laptop recently so these are from 2 weeks ago when we spent a lovely sunday up at my sister's place in ware. lunch in the garden then visited the stables for a quick trot about on gill's horse, tango.

ride like an egyptian

(viewed 584 times)
all this bike stuff has just reminded me that i documented some egyptian single speed bike action a few months back. here's some of my favourites. i love looking at how people use their bikes round the world. really puts all my aesthetic faffing into perspective. i think all of these were in luxor.
