IT'S CARNIVAL TIME

(viewed 644 times)
Article from the Driffield Times, May 25th 2011.

"Brazilian drum beats have been blasting out around Leven this week as school children enjoyed a day packed with international culture.

Pictured are youngsters enjoying a Brazilian carnival day at Leven CE Primary School, which coincided with a visit from a delegation of headteachers from Cameroon, in West Africa.

Pupils have been looking at how West African culture was taken to the South American country of Brazil during the slave trade.

Claudio Kron visited the school to lead a Brazilian samba drumming and dance session, while Antoine Robinson introduced youngsters - many of whom wore t-shirts and face paint inspired by the Cameroon flag - to the world of West African drumming.

The whole school got involved with the event and headteacher Andrew Dolman said it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Earlier this year Mr Dolman, along with two other local headteachers, spent a week on an exchange visit to the fishing village of Limbe, in Cameroon.

This return visit by the Cameroon headteachers was part of the exchange which has seen Hook Primary School, in Hook and Mount Pleasant CE Junior School, in Market Weighton, link up with three schools in Limbe.

BRAZILIAN / CAMEROONIAN CARNIVAL DAY

Thank you to everyone who made our carnival day so special and made all of our visitors feel so welcome.

We've had a great time learning how to dance the samba, play the drums and create our own costumes.

We also learned how the Brazilian music travelled with slaves from West Africa in the past.
