CAMEROON VISIT 2011

These photos are from the town of Limbe.

The following is an article from the Hull Daily Mail - Tuesday, February 15, 2011. (Journalist Trudi Davidson)

Broadening horizons: Schools' internet links with Africa
PARENTS have raised funds to enable three East Riding schools to open up internet links with schools in west Africa.

Leven Primary, Hook Primary and Mount Pleasant Junior have forged links with three schools in Cameroon after parents raised more than £1,000 to pay for laptops and internet connections for the African schools.

Pupils in the East Riding schools will now be able to keep in touch with children at three schools in the Cameroonian coastal town of Limbe via a shared international blog.

Staff from the three East Riding schools have just returned from a visit to Cameroon to cement the links that have been developed over the past two years with financial support from the British Council.

Leven head teacher Andrew Dolman travelled to the central west African country with Mount Pleasant head Adrienne Palmer and Hook teacher Pip Mann.

He said: "It was wonderful to be able to get to know the head teachers, staff and children at the three schools in Limbe.

"We hope the link will enable our children to find out about the similarities between England and Cameroon and to celebrate the differences.

"Our children and theirs will be able to e-mail and use the international blog together and share ideas."

Parents have backed the project with donations from fundraising to buy three £200 laptops and a £750 internet connection.

Mr Dolman said: "The cost was more than a teacher's salary for a year in Cameroon.

"Hopefully, this will be a sustainable link and it will enable the children to have an eye on a different part of the world.

"It will give the children a different outlook on the world."

Head teachers from the schools in Cameroon are set to visit the East Riding in May.

The project has been backed by £6,300 from the British Council.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

How are you celebrating Christmas at your school. We've had a Nativity Play, a Christmas Festival of music, a Christmas Fair and today and tomorrow the children are having parties. What happens at your school? The last two photos are from our visit to the Pantomime at Bridlington Spa.
