Sofiya - empty streets thanks to George Bush

That fool Bush decided to visit Sofiya at the same time as us. The streets and important buildings were cordoned off and police swarmed everywhere. But the public didn't seem bothered at all and no-one lined the streets or anything! It was basically an inconvenience to us - we had to walk long detours to get anywhere, and then when we were on our plane home, Mr Important decided HE wanted to leave earlier than planned so we had to sit on the runway for 45 minutes, which meant he was directly responsible for our missed connection and subsequent lost luggage. Thanks a bunch, Mr President *raspberry*

Miss Havisham's house

(viewed 983 times)
One of squillions of examples of gorgeous architecture gone almost derelict due to forced abandonment of traditional Bulgarian properties under Communism. They are very, very gradually being repaired though :)

Steve & Cat's chairlift nightmare

(viewed 791 times)
This was terrifying! A chairlift of the VERY rickety variety hauled a squealing me and a clinging-to-beer husband up the side of a mountain. It was even worse coming back down - we were so high up it was like being in an open air aeroplane. By the way, that's my crazy mother-in-law in pic 3, waving like a lunatic.

Antique Communism

(viewed 694 times)
There were lots of antiques stalls dotted around selling old Communist items - it seemed odd that things that would have been so important, and still are important in a historical context, were being sold en masse in trays for just a few pounds. But there must be hundreds of these things knocking about.

Viktor!

Captured in a rare moment in between singing the "laylou" ("auntie") song at the top of his lungs, and stuffing his little face. I have never seen a child eat so much. He even asked his mum if he could eat my copper pendant!

Spectacular views...

Shipska monument - we were promised the best view in Bulgaria - alas,
the enormous cloud that shrouded the top of the mountain had other
ideas! We couldn't even see the top of the monument, nor the car at the
foot of the steps, so the view over the (I'm guessing) mountains,
valleys and villages was sadly lacking!
