Superb Sculptures!

Today Year 6 were treated to an absolute fantastic morning courtesy of Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. First of all we were shown a sculpture which is over 300 years old! It showed the greek figure Meleager and started off life as a tree trunk before being carved, coated and then painted. Next the children looked at a more abstract sculpture, carved from marble, before capturing their own ideas of swirls and patterns. We then got the chance to make our own sculptures using pre-cut pieces. All of the children worked really well together in small groups and created some very imaginative pieces. Next we had a hands on opportunity to do some real sculpting of our own. The children carved bars of soap, using just a tea spoon. Mums and dads - we hope you liked their finished results Finally we had some spare time to look around a moving sculpture exhibition which is currently showing at the gallery until September. If you are stuck for something to do in the summer holidays I can definitely recommend the Ferens Art Gallery. It has such a variety of art to look at and best of all it's free!

Following on from our African Arts Week, Year 6 had a Brazilian day. This involved Samba dancing, drumming and capoeira. As well as experiencing all of this the children learnt how the music had come from West Africa.
Thank you to Claudio and Danny for a wonderful and uplifting day.
