Exploring an old estate

(viewed 293 times)
Exploring the nooks and crannies of an old estate, on Lough Key. It's now a public forest park, but used to belong to a family who landscaped it all around 1825, with fake canals, bridges, folies... now it's overgrown, the place makes a great exploration playground. That's me exploring.

Won't start!

Eric's engine won't start. It turns out to be a flat battery, but it gets a good looking over.

The Crannog

(viewed 1132 times)
On a small lough we stopped in, there was a crannog, a little artificial fortified island, in the middle of it. We went exploring it on the dinghy with Eric, who told us a thing or two: these were built in the 6th century, for a family group to live on. They were linked to the mainland by stepping stones, but those remained covered by water. The floor of this one was about a foot underwater. We went in with the dinghy and did a bit of dipping in the dark water and could feel a slab, where the fire place might have been. We found a little piece of pottery. But on the whole it remains a mysterious place.

Going to the island

(viewed 326 times)
We're on Lough Garadice, and two mysterious islands lie in the middle. Ted and I borrowed Jill and Giles's dinghy and went and explored.. the first island was quite wild, with a great ruin of a church. But today we went to the second, where a ram guards the ruin of a castle...
We found out later that the sheep had been frightened by dogs and swam to the island, where it now lives and scares unuspecting visitors.

Leaving the lake

We're leaving Upper Lough Erne and sailing up river Woodford, narrow twists and turns... it's lovely.

A visit to Crom Castle

Day 4 or 5 - The jetty is just out of the water. The castle is still lived in, but the grounds and old castle are National Trust. Pictures at my next internet stop....
