the afternoon of June 29

so, the day after we were EVAC'ed out, we were allowed
back in the neighborhood. The National Guard had
arrived -- without rifles, which would have been handy
-- and were setting up a checkpoint and headcount
system that was in place for most of the next week. I
think we could stay and collect personal items for no
more than two hours, at which point the Guard said
they would have no choice but to come down and
frogmarch us out. They weren't fucking kidding. [cough
cough] The little creek near the house had receded off
our road, but the river was still rising, another
house exploded and the sky always had at least one
rescue chopper flying low and slow over the flooded
areas, still looking for people. They kept that up for
days and days. Oh, and our cats were freaked out, one
we thought had escaped, and the water in the basement
had dropped from about a step from the first floor
down to three-four steps from the top. huzzah.

Little Man Arrives (1 of 3)

Struggling through hot water on a very loud fire truck. A bumpy, long but fast bus trip to the EVAC center. Spending some of a wet, hot afternoon "in the shade" with all the other pets, and chainsmokers. A cramped car ride to a relative's house, which belongs to another cat. All in a rusty cat carrier that smells of another cat's piss. Little Man was a trouper, and endured his personal ordeal with grace.

Returning, briefly, to the house

Even the next day showed the river levels dropping. The shot looking down the bone-dry hill street is of the flooded area that my fire truck struggled through about 30 hours earlier. We were given from the late afternnon to 6pm to collect personal items we needed and attempt a (generally freaked the fuck out) cat head count. We were two cats short when the National Guard said we were leaving.

Ride dire ride. The parkway near the college looks utterly normal. My uncle picks some of us, including Little Man, up after an hour or so.
