ZERO

(viewed 440 times)
Brand new trip computer, all settings at zero. A rough estimate of the
distance from Pembroke Dock to Cambridge via the Lon Don is 300 miles. Over
4 days that?s an average of 75 miles per day. I probably will not cycle all
of it. I?ll probably start by getting the train to Carmarthen and cycling to
Cardiff from there (Thursday), then train from Cardiff to Bristol, cycle
from Bristol to Farnham (Friday), cycle from Farnham into London (Saturday),
do the London ? Cambridge sponsored thingy on Sunday, get a bit drunk, and
assess my options, and my physical and mental state.

CH-CH-CH-CH-CHANGES

(viewed 441 times)
Miss Jenkins is all changed around the handlebar area ? new riser bars,
ergonomic grips, revoshifters and brake levers, which should maximise my
comfort zone.
She and I are now all ready for Sunday?s ride, which is rapidly turning into
a logistical nightmare. All will be well, I?m sure.

IMPORTANT EDIT: Due to some plans not exactly hanging together very well (as in we didn't actually make any) things have changed. The Hobo family will not be coming to the Lon Don, and I hear the Capital breathe a large sigh of relief. The Hobo Himself WILL be coming to the Lon Don, oh yes, and will in fact be cycling the entire way. From Pembroke Dock. To cycle from the Lon Don to Cambridge. Then he will cycle home. End of transmission.

LIQUID SUNSHINE

It was a sunny day until I was far enough from home to get unavoidably wet.

FW: THE TROUBLE WITH KATHRYN JENKINS

(viewed 361 times)
A few days ago, in hefty rain, the back wheel slid from beneath me on some
lethal moss and algae mixture, and I received non-fatal blows to my elbow
and hip. Thankfully a solid concrete surface was there to break my fall.
Miss Jenkins seemed to be fine, and got me home in one piece, but over a
couple of subsequent rides, gear changing became at first difficult, then
random, then nigh on impossible. I changed the cables, both inner and outer,
applied lashings of lube, but to no avail. I noticed the scratches on the
Sora mech, and there was indeed some ?play? where there shouldn?t have been,
so I took myself down to the bike shop for a better quality replacement. A
Sora mech would have cost me ?25 for a similar piece of aluminium shite. A
Tiagra mech, made of much sterner stuff was mine for ?40, haggled down from
?65, and he threw in a second Tiagra mech with a bit missing ?for spares?.
This morning I fitted the shiny new mech, connected up the all new cable,
only to find the problem still existed, which means the problem is somewhere
within the STI shifter. You cannot by A new STI shifter, you have to buy a
pair. They?re a minimum of ?100. In the words of the prophet, Bollocks. I?ve
calculated that it will be cheaper to fit new flat handlebars with
revoshifters (twist grip) and new brake levers, but that will have to wait
awhile. In the meantime, my current arrangement will just about work as long
as I avoid top gear...
