Otley Show

We went down to the Otley show on Saturday, it was really soggy and
muddy, but great fun! And I found out all about keeping chickens! So I
might get some! Yes I might!

Cookery frippery

Jo was doing a launch for her new walking scheme, so I made the biggest pasta salad in the world, and about 13 kilos of baked potatos.

Not even half of it was eaten in the end (not because it was crap, you
understand, in fact there were plenty of complements), I just made
waaaaaay too much.

Didn't get wasted though, took it down to St Georges Crypt to feed to the homeless. aren't we good?

Aaaanyway, it was hilarious fun messing about in a real catering kitchen!

Most awkward ice cream ever

(viewed 2086 times)
I got all my jobhunting tasks done by 3pm, so decided to treat myself to some vanilla ice cream. I'm usually quite the cook, so it's not usually a problem to knock up some creme englaise and freeze it into yummy ice cream.

I made a bit of a mess trying to make said ice cream. First of all I tried to
mix up the cream a bit before pouring it out , and a bit of the seal broke and
a bit went on the floor. oops.

Then I put it with some milk in the pan to bring to just before the boil while
I got the yolks out of the eggs and into the sugar - but the pan boiled and it
went WHOOSH over the top and made a bad smell. oh dear.

Then I whished the eggs together with the sugar, and realised I'd forgotten to
put the vanilla in the milk to infuse. GAH!

So I quickly cut it open and put as much as I could in, then dropped it in and
nearly burned my fingers getting it back out again. oww!

Finally I whisked it all together and it went together fine and tastes nice and
lovely and like ready to freeze ice cream.

Then I went to get the ice creme machine from the freezer and realised I hadn't
frozen the bowl.

So I poured it all into the new jug. Aah, good new jug.

It'll have to be finished tomorrow, but that should give the vanilla a chance
to infuse... this all happened in the space of about ten minutes! I was
knackered at the end of that!
