why I joined facebook

On October 31, the Children's Storefront burned down and was demolished. For over 30 years it been a place where kids and parents taught each other how to survive and have fun. Because it is so old, it is one of the few unstructured parent-child resources in Toronto. I took my boys there, and was lucky enough to take Oscar there. Now most of my spare time is gone. We are fundraising and looking for a new home. I just can't say what a miracle of fun and sanity it was. They have a facebook site so I joined. Forgive me for not friending everyone but facebook is not my style, and my sons are definitely not keen on having their mom around...so take care, and wish us the best.

facebook is called 'The Children's Storefront Needs a New Home'
website is http://childrensstorefront.com/

I like low places

I follow the stream beds because they are low and last to frost, looking for the plants that still believe it is summer.

we have good leaves here.

I am all about plants these days.
Horsetail, equisetum, may survive us.
and you can use them to clean your dishes when you're in the bush. they are like wire because they have so much silicon in them. did you really need to know that?

hawk hill

(viewed 1076 times)
Every fall, all the owls, hawks, eagles--the raptors--fly south and they hit Lake Ontario. They cannot fly across Lake Ontario, so they fly along it until they can go south. Top photo is the hawk counting crew. From September into winter, they sit on Hawk Hill and count the birds. Today was a good one--138 turkey vultures, 4 golden eagles, 5 American eagles, and lots of birds I missed because I was there for plants, not birds. I thought they deserved the sundog rainbow. They will be there tomorrow, and the next day, and the next...until the birds stop coming. And they have eyes as keen as hawks.

are you the theramin?

I cannot show you how much fun this was. Wherever you moved, you made sound. People would say, no, do it this way. Or sorry, I am waving my arms to make the bells ring..highly interactive because you bumped into people or someone had a theory about what they were doing, totally absorbing and a major success.

financial ups and downs

In Toronto's financial district there were carnival rides. Just like the financial rides. they all end up with you being on the ground.
