The price of figs

Oh the largesse of Tesco! That makes 29.5pence per fig. If you're a fan of figs, you'll realise they're a pretty small, but delicious fruit, about the size of a large plum. They're currently quite fashionable thanks to being popular in Italy and with Jamie Oliver.

Not a mile away from this shop, my local Asian grocer has been consistently selling them at the rate of 10 for £1. Even at the poncey (but nice) Italian deli in the same area you can get about 6 for £1.50ish.

I did want to post a pic of the 10 for £1 figs alongside this for comparison, but the guy at the little shop got a wee bit paranoid last time I tried to photograph his fruit, so I left it.

But I'm naming and shaming anyway. I think Tescos - and the other supermarkets - trade on the fact the people have heard of an ingredient and have no idea of what it might be worth.

Me, I love figs. Fig pictures

I'm not sure if I'm meant to be impressed or appauled - it's like bogroll, I have NO idea how much that's meant to be.
