The Atrium

As you will see if you click on this map Sheffield Hallam University is made up of the following bulding all surrounding the central atrium:

Owen Building
Norfolk Building
Harmer Building
Surrey Building
Howard Building

The guy who showed me round on my first day said he thought they used to be separate buildings (the atrium would have been space outside) and then they were joined up. The hill that the site is built on explains why when you come in through the main entrance you are on level 5 whilst the Surrey building that I work in has an entrance on level 2. It also explains why I have to go upstairs to get to the main entrance at ground level even though we have a good view past the train station from our office - I'm not underground but we have to go upstairs to get out!

Anyway, that's a lot of waffle but Crickson asked for a picture of my work place and here it is. I love the building - the huge central atrium with its massive glass roof, the big cafe on the bottom floor, the other smaller cafes that are about the place and the fact that all the buildings have entrances on diffferent levels. It's great.

As I think I said recently, if i ever catch up the the tosser who designed the Roger Stevens and Manton buildings I will nail them naked to a tree upside down, shout at them for being the worst and most sadistic architect in the world and then...gahhh it makes me angry just thinking about it : (

And what you can't see is that just behind the cafe on the ground floor are a few sofas were me and Siobhan sit to have our lunch. We've definitely got a good thing going on.

But yeah, it is a nice place so I hope I can get something permenant there.

Burton Albion Massive says:

He works as a sandwich maker - on the bacon line, hence sitting around in the cafe during his lunch hour. I presume he gets free coffee.

thanks BAM, now i know why he wanted those new shoes

Would you believe they make me pay for the coffee!!?

The work I'm actually doing is almost too dull to explain. For students who have graduated I'm checking they have the full 120 credits for each of the 3 years. Other great stuff like that.

At the moment though it looks like there might not be enough work for it to last so maybe I'll get a promotion to sandwich maker in the future.

Isn't that the kind of thing a computer can check?

5th Feb 2006, 11:00

Teflon - you would think wouldn't you!

It is completely ridiculous, with the best will in the world I'm not 100% sure I can add things up to 120 accurately for hours on end. I mean, I don't think I've made 1 mistake but I'd be foolish to be surprised if something slipped through.

A computer could do it in 2 ticks and not make mistakes.

Not that I'm complaining about having the job!!

I'm just amazed anyone actually checks...

my GPA ended up being perilously close to the pass/fail threshold, thanks to some rubbish grades in courses I'd long since given up - but I did need Excel to work that out...

WT you dont play darts then

5th Feb 2006, 19:46

WalkleyTalkley says:

FF - darts.... 120.... Shanghai.

There is no televised sport/game that I don't watch!!

5th Feb 2006, 20:48

FilbertFox says:

you need to get out more! Do you class darts as a game or a sport?

5th Feb 2006, 20:56

You're probably right FF. I think I'd call darts a game rather than a sport. But darts is great because of the calls that bloke says.

Obviously you've got the 180 which goes something like:

ooooonnnnnnne huuunnnndreeeeddd and aye-teeeeeeeee

But I'm a big fan of something comedy like "27" when they are trying to get as high a score as possible. But my personal favourite is the truly awesome "no score".

5th Feb 2006, 23:03

FilbertFox says:

"no score" is all i ever here when i atempt to play darts, or ahrehs as my grampy called 'em

Will Kate be posting then?

7th Feb 2006, 19:42

Hello to the new addition!

8th Feb 2006, 08:43

Not sure if Kate will be posting (pictures or comments) but she may do from time to time. Or she may lose interest completely.

Anyway, I'll pass on the hellos as I'm not sure she'll read them here!!
