Northern fish and chips are the best.

The fish was perfect, not oily, just meaty white fish encased in a crispy batter.

From Hillycroft fish and chip shop, LS27.

Winner of best fish and chip award - they take it seriously up there.

£3.25. Amazing food and amazing price.

£3.25! ? I live in Leeds (LS7) and pay £2.60....I was born on the east coast (home of fish and chips) and it costs me £1.99 for the best fish and chips on earth there.
Admitedly I've never tried hillycroft, have you tried Brets in Headingly?, thats as close to east coast fish and chips as you can get outside of lincolnshire...but you pay for it.

£3.25 IS expensive for the area, mostly its £2-£2.50

My mum recommended them and she did say they were a bit pricey!

Anyway, i live in london now and the only places that does remotely decent fish and chips costs £8.50 for takeaway. Unbelievable. And its no way as good.

I would to eat them now.

Hmn - Grimsby fisheries was OK, but not a patch on anything from the likes of whitby.

It was a shock going from Glasgow to Leicester, I can tell you.

Joe says:

I was born in Grimsby, and my local chippy was about 100 meters from the fish docks, they even filleted the fish themselves..8 inch long haddock and chips for £1.99.

Whitby is good, but Ernie Becketts in the market place in Cleethorpes and the Pea Bung on freeman street market in Grimsby both take some beating.

seaneeboy says:

Oh yeah, GRIMSBY fish is ace, but Grimsey Fisheries in Leicester was Avarage-at-best IMO - perhaps I just got a bad day though, FFox :)

:) I've never even been to Leicester...how odd that they're called Grimsby fisheries....

Euphro says:

That reminds me a bit of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band sketch, where, approximately, a posh gent walks in and says "I'd like this suit dry-cleaned", to which he receives the reply "oh no, we don't do dry cleaning". He then contends "but it says '24 hour dry cleaners' outside", with the answer "oh, no, that's just the name of the shop" :D

Helend - yes, all fish need to be boned properly before eating them, otherwise they'd stick in your teeth!

What a remarkably thoughtly comment :)

fish and chip lover(m-dot-johnston-at-aol-dot-com) says:

Sorry to disappoint but Grimsby Fisheries' chips in Leicester have become terrible. They bulk-fry and re-heat on demand. Theur chips are of a paley grey these days and taste dry and stale. Nowhere near what they used to be like!
