Had a 'Monologues' rehearsal yesterday and been studying 'Alien' in film class, it's all about vagina dentata, apparently. And it's hard to keep a straight face when the research includes imortal lines like "Having destroyed the alien, Ripley can become completely feminine - soft and passive, her domesticated pussy safely asleep" !

Gael: Yeah, I remember they laid that interpretation on me when I was doing The Meeja. If you want to impress, just swing back with the penetrative and phallic qualities of the tail (and of course the hermaphroditic nature of the tongue)
Has to be said I spent quite a lot of time disagreeing with that particular reading of Alien, mainly because Ripley was written as a male character originally. and while you can study how she moves from "masculine" to "feminine" modes of action it's basically adding back attitudes that Ridley Scott was trying to strip away from the story.
I dunno, it's years since I did this and I forget so easily...

alien was also designed by giger who in himself is a dirty man, the majority of his art has phalic and vaginal references, and also a lot of babies which disturbs me slightly
