The 50 Greatest Independent Films

continuing on the movie theme, I saw this link on reddit earlier and
checked it out. i was surprised to have only seen 32 of what Empire
Magazine consider to be the "50 Greatest Independent Films". i dont
agree with all of the choices, but i'd be hard pushed to pick a better
top 10. it was nice to see Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It" up there,
too ;)

any advances on my 32 from the rest of you folk out there?

mat says:

33. Although I'd hardly call a lot of those films indies. Also, not a single Asian film in there, which is lame. Nor any animation. Where's Ringu? Spring Summer Autumn Winter and Spring? Baraka? Tokyo Fist? Audition? Mononoke-hima? Kids? The Devils? Salo? The Addiction? El Topo?

Sideways was shit and Darko was dreadful pseudo-intellectual crap. Other than that, the top ten is OK. I'd never have put Resovoir Dogs at no.1 though, especially with City Of God (the film Tarantino ripped off for Dogs) at no 17.

Oh, I get so snobby about film... :)

jeez, somebody get this man an opinion! ;)

i liked the top 10, but agree with you on the distinct lack of any asian cinema or animation. Reservoir Dogs at No.1 is a dubious choice, but then this is Empire Magazine, not Sight and Sound. haha.

christ, I can think of at least 30 films I'd put ahead of resevoir dogs....and most of them aren't even there...gotta agree about Baraka, it's one of the finest pieces of motion picture ever created.

I've only seen 5 that i have watched all the way through. if i include ones i've half seen it'd still be lame and be about 8.

Run Lola Run is about my favourite from that lot ...

spongevid - shame on you!

Seen 36 of 'em.

I agree, there are a lot I wouldn't put on there and a lot I'd add. I thought resevoir dogs was stolen from Ringo Lam's City of Fire though, with Chow Yun Fat in Tim Roths role. City of God came several years after resevoir dogs (and was, in my opinion, robbed of the best director oscar).

I thought Amores Perros should be higher (one of my fave movies), as should Usual Suspects and Run Lola Run. And the lack of any Miyazaki and Ringu is just wrong.

I got 24 but am not so sure that they are all what I would call indie

i think that even the Empire editors wouldnt have picked the 50 that they did if they werent publishing the results in Empire itself. for the sake of the readers, i think they published a list that was palpable, and probably seen as *hip* to the casual reader (all buyers of Empire are casual readers!). How many of their readers are likely to have heard of Ringo Lam or seen Ringu? not many, i'm betting...

4th Apr 2006, 20:06

taniwha says:

Yup, they wanted to present a list that was at the fingertips of their readers.

I was just about to say what Badger said.

Only a lowly 15 seen by myself.

4th Apr 2006, 20:08

mat says:

City of Fire. I stand corrected.

In that case, bump me down to 32 again. :)

DocD says:

Man only 10 or so of these I would even rate and the eurocentric nature of the choices suck. What about a shared moblog on best filims? (as my auntie would say)

nige 2.0 says:

i'll drink to that doc.

42. clerks would kick darko ass in a shared moblog. the rascal empire editors are naughty missing out on lars von trier and not a single french film. whats up with missing out the french?

and kes.

nige 2.0 says:

"our kes". loach' finest! 42, damn, thats impressive, g.

as for von-trier, i never could get into dogville - as much as i tried - but dancer in the dark was just brilliant. so unique...

Uber_Spy says:

42 v impressive. I'm on 18. Run Lola Run & Lost in Translation are my favourites. Think a movie blog definitly in order...

i'll request...

13. Whaaa? And to think I used to consider myself a film geek, those days are far behind me. :(

There was a distinct lack of indie Brit films on that list! At least one Loach film should have been there. My Name Is Joe or Sweet Sixteen?

Run Lola Run, Lost In Translation, Usual Suspects, Being John Malkovich all make me very happy...

How would a shared movie blog work? A bit like the Memorablte Movie Moments competition?

5th Apr 2006, 11:28

mat says:

Von Trier! Of course. I *heart* Lars. The Idiots is sublime genius, Dancer in the Dark is probably my favourite film EVER and The Kingdom is (nearly) peerless TV horror/thriller/drama.

If anyone can explain how a shared movie moblog would work (without being the still open-but-without-prizes movie moments thing), I'll be happy to set one up. :)

One more for the list - Turkish Star Wars

5th Apr 2006, 17:07

nige says:

agreed on the shared movie blog thing - i've been racking my brains all afternoon, but cant get away from the boring-image-on-the-screen-type-thing, and thats gonna be pap...hehe.

as for turkish star wars...OMG!

5th Apr 2006, 17:15

mat says:

if you haven't seen it, you should get it, from anywhere you can (ahem). it's pure movie gold.

well bugger me. i stand corrected!
