Josh's departure

Josh left for Japan last week for his new assignment in Tokyo.
He had been working in London for more than 5 years.

I don't know if it is normal in uk because I have only worked for this company but we circulate a card for people leaving the compony, maternity leave etc. whilst circulating a card we also collect some money to get a present for the person, and give the card and present at his/her last day.
