but my two dogs have 'short' faces, which means they cant breathe well if they go in the water...one actually tries swimming underwater (ie drowning).....

One of our friends had a Sharpei that would sink like a stone in the water. DH had to rescue that dog more than once.

My mate lives on a narrowboat. Every now & then there's a spolsh followed by some very angry scrabbling, & in hurtles a cross, wet cat who's missed his footing on the gunwales again. Fortunately the water is very shallow near the bank & even cats can easily make it into the reed beds at the side...
