SE K800i or Nokia N80

I can get either of these two phones. They both have plus/minus points,
mainly the K800i having the better camera, but the N80 having wi-fi.So I am stuck for choice and would really appreciate people's views of
these two phones.

I work in Tech services for vodafone(please no hate mail)
If I were you I'd go for the SE. Better OS better battery life, better Memory cards.
Nokia's have a tendancy to crash.
In my humble opinion K800i would be much the shrewder investment.
I have one and I've never liked a phone so much.

You have a K800i already????

They told me it wasn't available until Wednesday.

The N73 (sucessor to the N70) is also due out in the next month or so.

I have my eye on that or the SE K800i. It partly depends which one t-mobile decide to release first!

I'm stuck between the wi-fi of the Nokia but poor battery life, against no wi-fi but better battery/camera on the Sony.

Joe is supposed to be doing us a review of the N80, but going on past form, I'd say the SE is going to be the better phone. Nokia know shit all about human interface design, and it shows.

540air says:

My brother got the N80 today. Looks quite good and with the money saving part that the wi-fi would offer, it seems good.
But.... the SE is going to be a better camera and the browser is supposed to be good.
Now if SE could add wi-fi........ That would be fantastic!!!!

I've recently migrated back from SE to Nokia, but this is purely because Orange wouldn't offer me the only Symbian OS based phone by SE, the P810. It felt like a real step backwards, and I now no longer have my radio (on the K700i, it's superb) and even such delights as simple as Infra Red. I know the K800i is similar to the K700i, and so I'd go for that.

How often will you use the wi-fi on the small screen of the phone?
How often will you use the better camera for pictures?
In eiather way you're gonna need battery life.

I've been lusting after the K800i for some time now (or the K790i). The cybershot camera really swings it for me. WiFi sounds great, as long as the implementation is good (being able to save pics off the 'phone as you took them would be a killer app, IMHO), but it is a known power hog. I will be very interested to hear what Joe has to say about the N80 :)

26th Jun 2006, 19:37

Euphro says:

There's quite an interesting N80 review here (link). Apparently you can't switch WiFi off, although it doesn't seem to do much to battery life, according to the reviewer. They don't mention much about the implementation, apart from saying that it's tricky to type-in SSIDs and encryption keys using a 'phone. The reviewer wasn't too impressed with the camera, although they don't post any example shots :)

540air says:

Thanks Euphro :)
I think I'm erring towards the K800i, which until Joe went with the N80 was the phone I too was waiting for (I was due a new phone back in April!!).
The nonturnoffable wi-fi and cack battery seem to point to sticking with SE. Also the fact that you can turn auto-focus off or use the "best-pic" choice of 9 shots is telling me to stick with SE too.

Mat - If I get it and you want me to do a review, just let me know ok? :)

Somehting to think about with the SE. There's no lense cover.

Still I'd go for the SE over the Nokia. I've had nokias in the past and I hate their interface. I'd so go SE ever time if givent the choice.

27th Jun 2006, 00:25

540air says:

Kos - There isn't?

I know the N80 has no lens cover, but on the SE site it shows the K800i as having one. (link)

E - I think that SE must have dropped the K790i, as it would appear to have vanished from their site.

wildrainbows says:

The SE K800i does have a lense cover.

Look here. (there is a link there btw!)

hahaha no worries kos, I figured you'd check and realise sooner or later!! :)

29th Jun 2006, 17:19

540air says:

Update:

Vodafone have 1400 K800i's in the warehouse, but they are apparently "in quarentine". So what I have decided to do is get the N80, try it for a few days, then send it back once the K800i has been vaccinated, or whatever they do.

This way I get to try out both, although I'm sure I'll end up sticking with SE.

Joe NLI says:

mate, sorry I didn't reply to your email, been a bit hectic round here....the wifi definitely makes up for the cameras shortfalls....it has a tendency to overexpose, not much shutter lag though...

29th Jun 2006, 17:33

540air says:

Joe - No problem, I figured you were probably busy. Hope everythings ok? :)

Cheers for the info. One of the biggest gripes I usually have is about shutter lag, so if it's not too bad that will certainly help. How have you found the battery life? I read/heard it was supposed to be awful and also, because it has a metal fronted case, the signal for reception isn't as good?

I should my one it tomorrow hopefully, so I'll have a play over the weekend to see how it performs. :)
