Thetford Forest is actually quite a recent invention and was largely planted after World War I. The brecks, a kind of dry sandy heath, were what were there before and in some places they are being restored. A good place to see adders/vipers, although I didn't have any success :)

That looks a lot like an area near where I grew up (Longmoor, Hampshire) - sandy heathland with scrubby heather and pine trees. Adders were not uncommon, although they're quite shy and tend to hide in the heather.
