This is the weirdest raccoon I have ever met. This morning it walked into my studio, climbed around the shelves, and then curled up on a shelf, got comfy, let the leg hang down, and after a while, climbed down and left.

you using super hero as bait?

I LOVE raccoons. :D Best animals ever.

Geodyne says:

Brilliant series.....and so unafraid!

16th Aug 2006, 13:23

i like the hanging leg - its cute, but aren't raccoons, like, vicious?

16th Aug 2006, 13:25

bronxelf says:

No. Raccoons aren't vicious unless directly threatened. Most of the time they're perfectly happy to coexist (you may read that as "take over and do as they like") with anyone and anything around them.

paintist, I ALWAYS use super heroes as bait.

16th Aug 2006, 13:28

swamprose says:

I think this is a case of 'take over and do what you like'. It snarled at me when I came really close. mostly it looked like it was planning an art project.

nige says:

he's a big 'un, too.

16th Aug 2006, 13:35

swamprose says:

I think 'he's' still a teenager. Adults are about a third bigger, and they have no sense of humour.

16th Aug 2006, 13:39

bronxelf says:

Perhaps they're less amiable in Toronto? They're quite nice here, really.

16th Aug 2006, 13:44

swamprose says:

Nah. not nice. Canadian, but post modern deconstructionist urbanites.

16th Aug 2006, 13:52

bronxelf says:

Well raccoons are always deconstructionists. Always.

But they're quite nice here. Honestly. Well fed and happy.

Twiglet says:

I could look at your Racoon pictures all day!

OJ says:

Fab. The second one is great. He/she looks very settled, like the family cat....

silar31 says:

Makes you wonder if he wasn't hand raised and released. He seems a bit too used to human habitation!

amazing - I have a very non-PC Davy Crockett hat somewhere ...

16th Aug 2006, 19:35

great photos. I like raccoons, but the ones here aren't so nice either. I was growled at by one walking home from the pub once (in my most unthreatening manner of course). Plus the whole rabies thing isn't so great, and may hamper any postal attempts to the UK...

Spiderbaby says:

These are great :)
When we stayed with RAB everyone said there were racoons everywhere, but we never saw one, even though we looked very hard.

16th Aug 2006, 20:10

swamprose says:

ooo. a highlight. 'shares the bow with raccoon'

no silar, nothing hand fed about this guy. and mandy--they leave cats and dogs alone, usually by shinnying up a tree fast.

Gael, pre-PC accessories are just so cool. give them something to talk about--wear that hat.

RAB--you run with the wolves. I have seen proof. no fat raccoon at midnight gives you sass.

thank you everyone. : )

You (your house anyway) have been adopted! Fantastic pics. The ones who took over the house when I lived in Idyllwild, California liked fried eggs and strawberries. :D

16th Aug 2006, 20:49

swamprose says:

thanks for the food tip. think he actually stopped by for a rest after ravaging the plum tree just outside the studio door. maybe it was just upset tummy time.

16th Aug 2006, 20:54

paintist says:

love the glaze on the pots in 2nd and 3rd shots....are they your handiwork?

16th Aug 2006, 20:56

swamprose says:

no, P. not my pots. on tuesdays during the school year, anyone can come to my studio and make things, or eat lunch, or catch up on the neighbourhood news.the glazed pots are my friend Laurie's. She worked very hard to get that colour and will be pleased to hear you liked it. my pots are on the other side of the room, waiting for the lichen glaze tests to make sense...

So, was he just there for your Tuesday Open Studio, unaware that they have been discontinued for the summer?

17th Aug 2006, 01:46

swamprose says:

yeah, magwich.except it was wednesday am. and I was up all night in the studio, hence ready for early visitors. maybe I just have to be here at 5am every day. he's probably been making pots here for years.

17th Aug 2006, 04:59

magikcat says:

wow! i've never even seen a real raccoon b4...

17th Aug 2006, 05:03

swamprose says:

magikcat,do you have any animals that live close to people, like I do? I bet you do--and yes, we all have rats so that doesn't count.

The raccoon even looks like a cat. Love the dude hanging from the lights

EVILMINK269 says:

Scary, raccoons are nocturnal as most know if they are out during the day it's not a good sign. Means they might have rabies I'd be careful although he looks to be quite nice they can be very mean and attack unprovoked if they are not sound mentally.

My neighbors raised one from a baby when I was a kid. His name of course...Was Bandit.

18th Aug 2006, 15:46

swamprose says:

evil, I was up all night, and the raccoon sauntered in about dawn, on his way home after a busy night. thanks for your concern. you are absolutely correct about being careful.

18th Aug 2006, 16:10

Knapparoo says:

We have a raccoon too, or should I say she has us. Quite the food critic. Likes crunchy dog food but doesn't like the mushy stuff. Eats grapes, ice cream, pepperidge farm ginger cookies, even likes Kashi Golean...she picks the little white bits out ....my wife calls her boo boo but she's more like piglet.
