Ooh, lovely.

Our blackberries ended up in a) a plum and mascarpone recipe and b) stewed with apple and greek yoghurt. How was your pie?

Mmm :)

It was lovely - First bash at something like this and she did great!

I've held onto a few and I'm going to use them with some duck breast :)

OJ says:

And again. Luuurvely. Wish I'd made a pie. How many did you pick by the way. I reckon we had at least a pound before I was made to stop.

Not a huge amount - pretty much what we have in the colander in the top shot - it's a bit higher up in Otley so they're not going to be 100% ready for another week or two...

It's kind of smack between the blueberry (bilberry) season and the blackberry season up there - so we got a few of each, but we'll have to go back for more :)

seaneeboy says:

A little more research and bilberries are similar to blueberries, but quite different in other ways.

Technically they're closer to cranberries, but they look and taste like small sweet blueberries.

Hurrah for wikipedia.

kudos to Jo on first pie making. They look delicious. And thanks for pointing me to Wiki, now understand what the difference between blueberries and bilberries are. both good blue things.

OJ says:

Swamprose, do blackberries grow in Canada? Just wonderin'.....

It seems like there's a good crop here this year. One little thing I love about Moblog, you can chart the seasons by the rash of blossom pictures, or bluebells, or blackberries....

29th Aug 2006, 14:53

swamprose says:

Yes. thorny massesof them. And something you don't have that looks like a blackberry, but has more seeds, and also called blackberry. People don't grow them, just pick them in the wild--but they are so far out of town, you'd have to make a special trip to pick them--not as popular as it seems in the UK.

29th Aug 2006, 16:07

OJ says:

Most of ours are wild too, it's just that the wild isn't so far away I guess.

Thanks for the info - mindless nosiness on my part!
