Electric Sheep says:

:(

Is it a red squirrel? 'cause the greys are vermin.

poor little fella

31st Aug 2006, 17:57

mat says:

Sheep - no, but it does look rather red in places, doesn't it.. perhaps some interbreeding has been going on (well, this is Norfolk after all). I'm sure the greys I used to see in Cheshire were much greyer than this one.

Mandy. says:

sadness. :(

i hit a bunny in my car on monday. i'm a murderer.

31st Aug 2006, 18:02

mat says:

I can't even count how many bunnies I've run down. A friend of mine used to live down a non-streetlighted lane that seemed, at times, full of them. Swerve to avoid one, you'd hit another two. It was often a good idea to hose the car down after visiting Pete a few times..

he looks like he's just having a nap.
Did you eat it?

31st Aug 2006, 18:23

anonymous says:

It's a great pic.

I don't get this distinction between animals worthy of liking and "vermin". What's wrong with pigeons?

31st Aug 2006, 18:37

mat says:

Gael - no visibly obvious cause of death, so it's not on the menu. I've never eaten squirrel. I would have no qualms about doing so though, should the opportunity arise.

I'll eat pretty much anything once. Pigeon, for example, is delicious.

Anon was me, sorry...

pete's sister ordered pigeon at a chinese restaurant in london. they served the head on the side.

Electric Sheep says:

What can i say, i go for the underdog. It's sad that a squirrel died, but it's less sad that it's a grey.

I'm sorry. I'm like that. Red squirrels just rock out.

31st Aug 2006, 18:45

mat says:

OJ - vermin are animals that cause excessive damage to crops, eat people food or are disease carriers. You don't have to dislike them. For example: I like rats, I think they are fascinating and intelligent animals. That doesn't mean I want them living in my greenhouse and eating my tomatos, and it certainly wouldn't stop me trapping/poisoning any that decided to do that.

But, that said, I'm not a fan of grey squirrels. I'd rather have our native reds. There used to be, and may even still be, a bounty on greys. A shilling a tail, the government used to pay.

31st Aug 2006, 18:47

mat says:

Mandy - last time I ate pigeon was in a chinese in London too. Salted with chilli, it was exquisite. They too served the whole bird, quartered. But then the chinese will eat the heads of just about anything. Brain is considered Good.

goode says:

Death to the Grey!

31st Aug 2006, 19:05

OJ says:

That was a silly thing for me to say wasn't it? Of course there is a definition of vermin.

I guess I find peoples differing attitudes to animals inconsistent.

taniwha says:

Once when I was hitch hiking through new zealand I got a lift with a guy who would collect road kill to feed his dogs.

31st Aug 2006, 21:02

Mandy. says:

used to be, if you hit a deer or elk in some states here, you had to report it to the police and it would be collected to feed state institutions - like prisons or nursing homes.

i think wyoming still does that.

31st Aug 2006, 21:39

factotum says:

I'm a murderer too, Mandy. I ran over a turtle of a secondary highway this summer, but couldn't avoid it because there was another car coming the other way in the other lane. It's still bothering me.

heh, how's that for dinner U_S, connnnective tiiiissssuuue....

1st Sep 2006, 19:44

Uber_Spy says:

Thanks for that Mandy. There was this article in the Metro (newspaper) a while back about this dude who's written a 'Roadkill Cookbook' (yet to be published). He doesn't believe in killing animals to eat but doesn't mind scrapping them off the road. Said the weirdest thing he's eaten was a labrador. Nice!

RareAquaticBadger says:

Poor little bugger. Actually I think the angle of the shot almost makes it look more tragic and less "ewww". I think the expression, and the obviously-dead pose, actually makes you feel more sympathetic toward it; If you'd taken the photo directly above it for example, it wouldn't have the same effect.

Anywho, I think this is a wicked shot.
