Pathetic thing is, I bought one. Owner told me that carving vegetables is actually a UK thing and they used things like turnips. Candle in a turnip?

Now this answers my question about how you get them home. The orange colour is just stunning.

Fabulous colour. Don't see what's pathetic about that. Pumpkin soup freezes quite succesfully, as I recall. :)
Yes, pumpkins is newfangled stuff; we used to carve out not the little white turnips but the biggest swedes (rutabagas) we could find for Hallowe'en lanterns.

Midlife--The Great Pumpkin! I had forgotten.

Hildegard--I don't know for sure, but I think the pumpkins we carve are not the same as the ones we eat. Rutabagas sound more possible for lanterns--but hard to cut out, I think.

I'm not sure about the eating vs. carving, but I know that you can roast the seeds from carving pumpkins. They're delicious!

Mtn H-Absolutely. We always save the seeds from the pumpkin guts.

carving the swede( rutabaga?) was the only option for us for years....unless we grew our own pumpkins....but boy do they smell when they get hot...and they dont grow to any size either.....and very hard to cut....

I can imagine burning rutabaga. Pumpkins have a nice kind of burning smell. And so easy to carve

Hehe, a truckload of pumpkins! For a moment there, I thought they were all for you!
