they are very waxy too, slightly sticky/greasy....

Quince! Euphro beat me to it :) Was the 'smells nice' clue that gave it away. They're meant to be grown with apples, though I don't know why.
I think that they are not ripe yet...although they have all fallen from the tree/bush thingy......
They should ripen on their own if you keep them inside for a while :)
I have been looking at recipies....just a slice of ripe quince in an apple pie gives it a perfume...mmmmm

Never seen a quince before. Read it up. They are so fragrant you can use them as room deodorisers? boil up the seeds to make a gum arabic? you WILL be busy.

Oh, and baked quinces with lime cream! Just core them and drizzle them with a touch of honey and white wine before baking.
