"why would a reviewer make the point of saying someone's *not* a genius? do you especially think i'm *not* a genius? you didn't even have to think about it, did you?"

"monkeys are superior to men in this: when a monkey looks into a mirror, he sees a monkey.”

"i am secretly afraid of animals.... i think it is because of the usness in their eyes, with the underlying not-usness which belies it, and is so tragic a reminder of the lost age when we human beings branched off and left them: left them to eternal inarticulateness and slavery. why? their eyes seem to ask us."

"we've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of shakespeare. thanks to the internet, we now know this is not true..."

ok, so i've read the book many times, but this was the first time i've seen
the film, and it freaked me out, big-style.

i loved it. which is weird, because the sound was buggered, the editing was terrible, and it was full of kids. BUT it was full of beautiful shots, and of course the story is excellent.

thanks heavens for the guardian

I like that film too + book is awesome.
You might like the 1990 version they did. It's not as beautiful as this one, but it's still pretty good. worth checking out if you like the material.

I watched this film years ago...I think it must have been in the early 90s and I'm fairly sure it was an American film...might rent it so I can see it again, certainly made me feel uneasy as a kid!

Rarely, book and film are both top.

My son had his sixth birthday the other day, it was warm so him and his doxzen or sao mates were running around shirtless. Reminded me of this film (the nice bits of course)
