it does rather have the look of a handbag.......but I think it's supposed to be a lantern.....
I think so...a guardian gnome, to protect him on his travels.....

This brings back wonderful memories of gnome-napping when I was in college back in the 80's in lovely country Bathurst. The nice people all had them... and then we'd go for an ice-cream run at 9pm before returning the kidnapees safely home before they were missed :-)

Jesson, there was a spate of gnome nappings over here, where they would take the gnomes on holiday, take photos of them, and then post ransom notes to their owners.....oh and send postcards from the gnome too.....
My sister laughed at other peoples gnomes - so one just arrived on her doorstep one day and then it received postcards from all over the world - took her 6 months to work out who was the perp...oh it was fun........
