"why would a reviewer make the point of saying someone's *not* a genius? do you especially think i'm *not* a genius? you didn't even have to think about it, did you?"

"monkeys are superior to men in this: when a monkey looks into a mirror, he sees a monkey.”

"i am secretly afraid of animals.... i think it is because of the usness in their eyes, with the underlying not-usness which belies it, and is so tragic a reminder of the lost age when we human beings branched off and left them: left them to eternal inarticulateness and slavery. why? their eyes seem to ask us."

"we've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of shakespeare. thanks to the internet, we now know this is not true..."

african monkey proverb: "the day the monkey is destined to die, all the trees get slippery."

cheers guys. b'elf - you're exactly right - i was so glad to be able to play few games with my friends.

i haven't seen jenny in a while, and the second game against her was the most intense, exciting game of chess i've played EVER.

i should probably tell you about the exhibition - for the past three months jenny has set up a chess board outside her office and invited passers-by to play game. jenny works near me, and the area is full of housing charities (such as shelter), a jobcentre, and various other charities dealing with things like literacy, immigration and the like.

the people she met all had great stories to tell, and through chess she learnt the different paths people can take.

that's a great idea - what is she doing with the info' - is that what the exhibition was about?

10th Nov 2006, 11:31

maggie, viv - the chess sets were just there for fun. the exhibition was of photographs she'd taken of hwer opponents, or whatever caught her eye, during the games. next to each one was a little story about each person, and how they came to be playing chess in the middle of one of bristol's less salubrious squares.

one woman who played her was a prostitute, for example
