Christmas? I refuse to accept that it even exists until the 1st of December :)
I'm not a Christian, so won't be celebrating Christmas. You don't catch me celebrating Hannukah, Eid or anyone else's religious festivals either. :)
I'll join in the feast day, and the presents bit with reluctance*, but only as a midwinter excuse for eating a lot. Solstice celebration, is how I think of it.
Christmas fact - most of the mechanics of the Christian celebration is ripped off the pagan festival of Yule, which is basically a blood festival. Slaughter something, eat it, drink, give gifts, then hope like hell the sun comes back soon.
* don't get me wrong, I love giving people presents. I just don't like having to buy them all at once.
I am not a Christmas person and I am not a Christian person. I have an enormous family and the BS has a fairly large one. I actually resent the cash outlay at Christmas and having to struggle in crowded shops that are blaring out absolute shite by Slade or Wizard. I especially dislike that song that starts "Driving home for Christmas...." However, Christmas is unavoidable in this country, it is something we all go through together like a thunderstorm. I make the best of it and concentrate on the bits I like best. I like cranberry sauce, I like bread sauce, I like mistletoe and I like Christmas lights. I also like time of work....
...and stuffing. Really rich stuffing with chestnuts and sausage meat....
Christmas is cool, doesn't have to be a religious thing, just have a good time.
Cranberry sauce is so easy to make yourself Twigs. fresh cranberries in a pan with a "drop" of water and a cinnamon stick, when they start popping chuck a cup of sugar in there 'till it all splodges together.
Done.
Thanks Joker but I can make it and will do at Christmas. My famous Old Mother Twiglet's cranberry sauce recipe is on the moblog forum cook book.
And BTW, we have a good time every day. It's just cheaper the rest of the year.....
