I am married to Spiderbaby and live in Banbury, Oxfordshire after eight years living in the USA and Sweden. I am working and training as a clinical scientist for the NHS in Oxford.

There are now over ten years of photographs on my blog! It all started with a photograph I took on the 1st of May 2004... It's been a wonderful journey, thank you all who have shared it with me, and made this blogging community one I keep coming back to!

Interesting things I read recently:

"Only one in five people born [in the UK] since 1975 believes in God".
Source: Prof David Voas, University of Essex

"For every dollar invested in the Human Genome project, $141 was returned to the US economy". Francis Collins, NIH
Source: New Scientist 27 July 2013.

I am Pavlovs_dog on PSN and would be happy to link up with Playstation-owning mobloggers : )

Too Much Information: The first album I ever bought was the Fraggle Rock soundtrack. Pretty cool, eh? I was only 16 : )

this all looks very digestive system.

all I know is that I have never seen a nematode but there are supposed to be thousands in a handful of dirt.

crickson says:

In a handful? Millions. In fact, if you can imagine a long line of all the animals in the world stretching off into the distance, nematodes would make up three quarters of that line. Or so I'm told. One thing I do know for sure is that some nematodes are evil and must be destroyed.

swamprose says:

oh dear. there I am sticking my hands in all kinds of dirt all the time, and they're there, just waiting.

some of my best friends are nematodes

swamprose says:

I googled nematodes, and m_f, you should know that one nematode is about 8 meters long. Of course it IS found in the gut of a sperm whale, so you might not meet it on the street.

but they're out there. *cues the music*

The nematode I worked with had a freaky syringe-needle apparatus sticking out of it's face so it could suck the contents from plant cells.

I'll try to get Liz to comment, she loves her worms.

Nematodes are evil. They're one up from working on Drosophila though.

Someone in my lab had their nematodes sent up to the international space station to look at DNA instability!

5th Dec 2006, 19:57

crickson says:

Cool!!! Were they exposed to space? Nematodes are right tough little gits.

BaggieBoy says:

Nematodes? Sounds like some sort of alien that might in a game on the wii.

5th Dec 2006, 21:27

crickson says:

Actually nematodes are so strange it's been seriously suggested that they are from space.

I blame Torchwood or Doctor Who

oohh they remind me of the Spongebob SquarePants episode where they eat eveything in Bikini Bottom & drink his pineapple.
Wow check out my intellectual input *ahem* :D

I'll have to look that one up!

Not exposed to space as far as I know, just zero grav/cosmic rays. I was looking for the pubmed reference, but it seems to have mysteriously vanished.

The must be kinda cool to do research on though; knowing that there'll be exactly 959 cells and what their fates are. Much easier than working on humans (and less of an ethical dilemma over killing swathes of them).
