a nice random image to get you started:

i now have a FLICKR page too!

"why would a reviewer make the point of saying someone's *not* a genius? do you especially think i'm *not* a genius? you didn't even have to think about it, did you?"

"monkeys are superior to men in this: when a monkey looks into a mirror, he sees a monkey.”

"i am secretly afraid of animals.... i think it is because of the usness in their eyes, with the underlying not-usness which belies it, and is so tragic a reminder of the lost age when we human beings branched off and left them: left them to eternal inarticulateness and slavery. why? their eyes seem to ask us."

"we've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of shakespeare. thanks to the internet, we now know this is not true..."

african monkey proverb: "the day the monkey is destined to die, all the trees get slippery."

"i'll buy a bunch of monkeys, dress them up, and make them re-enact the civil war"

shoes hanging on wires? Is this not to map out ghettos? for gangs etc? Or is that a myth?

13th Dec 2006, 14:28

Do you think some kind of boozing was involved with the shoes ending up on the wire?

Joe says:

I once heard that this was a way of marking gang territories, perhaps thats why you associate it with new york?

13th Dec 2006, 14:28

goode + joe: i did not know that.

i hope its true, and that i just stumbled through the 'patch' of some st pauls gang...

Spike says:

goode is right, in ghetto culture, but in this country and probably where it was taken, its mere bullying, i know, revolt against the bully's and take their shoes and throw them up, then theres no was of them chasing you!

Spike says:

Various theories of the meaning of the practice:

personal artistic expression (ie: "just because")

to indicate areas where drug dealers operate (also known as 'drug shoes')

celebration of a person's loss of virginity

celebration of a wedding or honeymoon

pranks and jokes played against the owner of the shoes

graduation celebrations

gang sign, or memorial for slain gang member.

derived from army practice of throwing boots over wires when leaving a base or post.

hmmm. all interesting. i could see it indicating a drug area, its particularly prevelant in my area.

of course, it may have started as a myth, but the myth may have become truth...
