Rat-trap

We've been terrorised by rats recently and i've had enough of them gnawing at doorframes, skirting boards, phone cables, etc etc; so i was advised to try to catch one live, then make sure it's distressed so that other rats hear it and think "not a good place to be"...
We've had the traps set now for a week and still nothing, and the longer it takes the more i pity the rat we finally do catch, as i'm gonna make damn sure it's in distress.
Now where's those long-nosed pliars and my hunting knife...
