Pummel that rice!

Had a good day pummeling rice in to rice cakes last Sunday! This fun yet tiring (the mallet is pretty heavy) practice, known in Japanese as Mochitsuki, is often carried out over the New Year period. We were planning to do this with friends a bit closer to New Year, but due to other commitments it got put of until mid-January. Still, it was great fun. The pummeler hits the rice with a very heavy wooden mallet, whilst another person has the "dangerous" job of turning the rice whilst the mallet is raised. There was one moment of disaster when the mochi (the beaten rice) got stuck to the mallet during pummeling and flipped out on to the floor (I wasn't the pummeler at this time thankfully!) - no pictures of that alas... Still, no one had their hands pummeled thankfully! Once pummeled, the mochi was divided by hand into smaller portions, and rolled up into ball shaped cakes. These were then dipped in various "condements" and eaten. Very nice too!
