This has been the week from hell....

...and it ain't over yet. Let's recap, shall we?
Saturday: Surprise retirement party for DH's dad. Went off without a hitch, everyone had a ball, so this is a good thing. However, about halfway through the night we get word that DH's grandfather (Gup) had been taken to the ER by ambulance because an aunt found him very disoriented and obviously quite ill. The word was a UTI & kidney infection, he was dehydrated. Ok, been here, done this, it's fixable.
Sunday: the word on Gup worsens - seems he also has pneumonia.
Monday: the pneumonia goes systemic, and the entire northeastern seaboard goes into a panic, as if we've never had snow. Hello, people, we didn't even get 1.5 feet. It was a goddamned windy flurry in any other winter.
Tuesday: I get to work to discover that the new (3 month old) computer has had a nervous breakdown of some sort. Track it down to the new LCD monitor. Spend the whole damned day talking to various customer service people once I wade through the voice response hell to get to live people. Whoever came up with the idea of these automated voice response systems should be put on permanent poop scooping duty at an elephant farm. Gup is about the same, maybe a little worse, depends on which medical type person you talk to.
Wednesday: Gup is much worse. The infection is systemic, he's nonresponsive, and the DNR is in effect. And, snow, what more do you need to know? Have I mention how much I fucking HATE snow? The one mid-week bright spot here is that an old family friend is practically giving us a vehicle to replace the truck which is on it's last legs.
Today: Gup died. The service is Monday, and a cousin who is a minister is driving up here from Pennsylvania to give the service, so this forecast better bloody well be right, she better not get stuck in snow on the way. I'm ready to fire the universe now - if she can't make it and we have to scramble any more eggs this week, I'm going to brain the universe with the fry pan.

Caine says:

I am so very sorry, J. Condolences to you and DH on your loss. The computer problems and snow are a misery and pain in the arse.

I hope things get better soon. (We're drowning in rotten weather too.)

silar31 says:

Thanks Caine. DH is doing....ok. He spent today doing all sorts of errands and chasing around though, so I'm not sure it's really hit him yet. He was very close to Gup, so I'm sure it's coming. We have nothing going on tomorrow so the plan is to spend it wrapped up in blankets on the couch catching up on the Tivo and trying to relax.

16th Feb 2007, 13:56

sympathy to you and DH, pneumonia does not mess around when it hits...

there is a lot to be said for "just getting on with it" when tragedy strikes, obviosly at some point you have to sit down and acknowledge everything that's happened, but by the time you get round to doing it you're obviously in a stronger position for dealing with it...
