It might explain why it failed in the first place. You can see the old cable just to the upper right of where the red cable exits into the soil at the top of the shot. I don't really know what it is for.

There were three vans and five blokes here at midnight working on it, although four of them just seemed to spend their time peering into the hole while the fifth one worked :)

Having committed to putting the overhead power lines underground in Lea Valley they've been doing depth moisture measurements (don't know the technical word) for at least a month more than planned - presumably because the water table is so high and they're still looking for safe places to do what they've promised.
