So I may as well install them...

Don't sit on the fence Joe say what you mean..

You saying I shouldn't install them?

Joe says:

well, I may be somewhat biased against Microsoft, but that aside, I haven't read a single positive review of Vista, every single writeup I've read has said that, although it has some nice features, the bad points outweigh the good.

The next version of Ubuntu is due for release on the 19th of April, I'm running the beta now, and I honestly can't see any reason to ever go back to windows.

Obviously, it's just my opinion, and you may well need applications that just don't work in Linux, but personally, I'd put it on Ebay, and download Ubuntu Feisty.

I have my main PC on dual boot with Ubuntu which I do use a fair bit the install isn't that good so I may delete the partition and do a fresh install of the new version.
The biggest downside to Unbutu was the lack of printer drivers for me.

I'm going to give Vista a go on the laptop for no other reason than it is running like a three legged dog and I was going to rebuild it with XP anyway. I use a lot of apps which are not Linux friendly so I can't move over totally.

And it was free...

To be honest, I'd be surprised (though I haven't done this myself) if you see any improvement in speed by installing vista, it's a notorious resource hog...I'd be interested to see what you think of it though.

and apparently this release of Ubuntu has concentrated a lot on hardware compatibility, so it may well solve your printer driver woes.

I'll let you know :)

I'm just copying all my stuff off it now so I'll be giving it a try shortly..

I hope so, because I do like it for day to day stuff. Photo editing etc I still use windoze and PhotoshopCS2

ubuntu is the best. my old laptop used to overheat and die on me every other hour when on windows, but when it ran about 2343 different versions of linux it would remain on for days.
the only "dislike" i have for ubuntu is that it doesn't let my inbuilt webcam or fingerprint reader work, but i barely use them anyway so i shall live!

I'm not a big linux fan (I run alot of games for work), but I'm so totally with Joe on the 'NOOOOO!' of installing vista. I have heard nothing but bad things about it.

And for the love of god, what have they done yet again to Office?

for the record i was totally against vista.. hey i was agaist XP when it came out too!

But i just recently bought a new machine with vista pre installed and really like it!

If you figure out how to stop all the useless stuff it actually just runs much like XP...
