is that the one you've been waiting forever for?

mat says:

uh-huh. I've been vaguely looking for one of these for about six months, and more actively so for the last few weeks. It's delicious. Can't wait for it to get darker so I can try the VR out.

congrats! you finally got hold of one of the buggers! looking forward to some tests and the VR shots!
did you get a good price? they all seem to be on eBay but not elsewhere

Mandy. says:

is it the same as the high end 'L' series for Canon? Like doesn't get much better than that? Because my one L series lens is just amazing for colors. I hope yours is the same.

mat says:

I think it's comparable to the L-series, yes. It's one of Nikon's best non/semi-pro lenses, afaik.

JBNM - got it for under £500 at London Camera Exchange on Timber hill. Took 'em three weeks once I'd put my name down, and I had to haggle on the price (like I was in any position to - they could price these at £650 and they'd still last less than a day)

you managed to haggle the price? under £500? i'm impressed! i've been in there a few times and they only seem to have vintage stuff - didn't know they could order in.

oooh loverly, being a n00b, what does the VR do?

20th Apr 2007, 17:30

mat says:

Vibration Reduction. Apparently good for four stops worth more shooting. (ie: shooting at 1/50s @200mm should be as stable as 1/200s @200mm)

goode says:

how would the 55-200 measure up? is it worth compromising in price?

4th Aug 2007, 13:15

mat says:

Don't know. I personally wouldn't bother with something in the 55-200 range, 'cos I like a bit of wideness in a multi-purpose lens, and a 55mm (74mm equiv) is a bit too long for day-to-day use (for me, your milage may vary).

My 18-200 hasn't been off my camera since I bought it. It's an excellent lens, even at a price of 500 notes, which I would highly recommend to anyone with the cash to spare. KenRockwell is a good source of info on other Nikon lenses.
