Almost sure it derives from the prototype design of this car by Buckminster Fuller. It was commonly used as taxi cab in some cities, as Rome, as can be seen in various movies of the times.

this was a brilliant car, it must have been the first ever people carrier, no room for luggage, most people had a trailer or a big roof rack. down the road from us is a bubble car museum and they have one
